Grades K-3 In this call to action, the authors encourage readers to consider how individual actions can make a big impact on the world. For example, ""Be a good Ancestor with water / Raindrops become puddles / Puddles become streams / Streams become rivers / Rivers become life."" They also spotlight the importance of being a good citizen to the land, animals that fly, things that swim, creatures that walk, neighbors, and oneself through thoughts, words, and feelings. Joseph's acrylic paintings depict a Pacific Northwest setting, filled with cedar trees, salmon, eagles, and grizzlies. Her palette is rich in earth tones and the vibrant hues of sunrise skies, and it stretches and swirls across two-page spreads. Each painting includes several interconnected scenes resulting in a dreamlike effect. While these vignettes are adorned with symbols of Northwest Coast Indigeneity, the intertwining of text and art signal a more universal aspiration: ""Children become adults / Adults become leaders / Leaders become Elders / Elders become Ancestors."" A perfect read-aloud for introducing the importance of caring for the earth.
